Who We Help

Youth Program Beneficiaries

August 17, 2011
A $300 contribution was approved by the Board for Walk 4 Justice, a non-profit organization created in January 2008 to raise awareness about the plight of the more than 300 native women who have been murdered or gone missing across Canada. Native women have organized a walk from B.C. to Ottawa to gain more publicity about this issue. Walk 4 Justice supporters consist of family members who have lost their loved ones across the nation. Women and men from all walks of life also join in the efforts to demand justice, closure, equality and accountability.

July 13, 2011
The Board agreed to sponsor two high school students to attend the October 21-23, 2011 Key Leader Arden Event. Key Leader is Kiwanis International’s leadership education program for students, primarily in high school. The Key Leader mission is to provide a life-changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership.

The club also approved $600 for the Carlington Community Health Centre’s “Helmets for Children” project. This worthwhile project (providing bike helmets) will enhance the confidence and growth of children.

June 8, 2011
The Board approved $1000 to the Parkdale United Church “In From The Cold” annual project that runs from November to the end of March. The Saturday afternoon gatherings offer hot meals, hospitality and pleasant company to the lonely and disadvantaged in the community. These funds will be used towards the replacement of the old automatic dishwasher/sterilizer.

A $400 contribution was approved for a “Wii Unit” for the Lepage Manor Community Centre. The Wii will be useful for residents to maintain a fitness program.

The After School Program at W.E. Gowling School was granted $900 by the Board. This program runs three days per week with 24 youth receiving nutritious snacks as well as help with their homework. This program provides an opportunity for at-risk youth to learn and develop the social skills necessary for interacting with peers and others.

Spring 2011
A $1500 contribution to the Kiwanis Music Festival in the National Capital Region. The Festival is an association of dedicated artists and volunteers who collaborate each year to make young musicians’ dreams come true! The Festival’s mandate is to encourage and promote the enjoyment and study of music and offers amazing and talented young musicians the opportunity to perform in concert, nurture their talent and help them build their future as professional artists. Over $50,000 in scholarships are awarded to deserving performers of all ages and degree levels.

The Ottawa Salus Corporation offers rehabilitation services, community support services, recreology and housing to men and women, 16 years of age or older, with mental health problems. The Board approved a $1000 contribution to aid this community mental health service.

February 11, 2011
The Board agreed to donate $100 to the Caldwell Winter Carnival sponsored by the Bellevue Community Centre.

January 30, 2011
A contribution of $760 was granted to the Bellevue Community Centre to allow approximately 20 youth to attend a babysitting course (which usually costs $50). This course will increase their skills and job prospects.

The Board approved $1000 to the Ottawa Valley Ambassadors Hockey Club which is a hockey team for athletes with developmental disabilities. There are 41 male and female athletes ages 12 to 58 playing hockey.

A $1000 donation will be given to the All Saints Anglican Church on 347 Richmond Road to support staffing requirements at the Westboro Region Food Bank and the Westboro Youth Centre.

December 8, 2010
The club approved a contribution of $500 to Pathways to Education which provides healthy snacks to the after school program for high school students in the Pinecrest social housing area.

The club also approved a $600 donation to the Bellevue Community Centre for their weekly two-hour Youth Drop In Program in the Caldwell Avenue area to provide sports, leadership and life skills.

And, approval was granted to provide $600 to the Eliminate Project. With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

November 2010
The club made a $100 donation to the CNIB Early Intervention Program.

November 4, 2010
Club members presented a $1,500 cheque to Alice Donachey, Principal of the Fisher Park/Summit Alternative Public Schools. The funds will be used for their Breakfast Club.

Cheque Presentation

Numerous studies have shown that students who receive a healthy, nutritious start to the day show a marked improvement in academic achievement. We would like to thank the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa West for supporting our Breakfast Club at Fisher Park Summit. The money donated will help us purchase large ticket items in order to build a Breakfast room where students can take some responsibility to prepare their breakfast and assist in the clean up. Since receiving the $ 1,500.00 we have purchased a dishwasher and had a new double sink put into the room we are designating as our Student Success Room.

November 2, 2010
Club members presented a $1,500 cheque to W.E. Gowling School this afternoon. These funds were earmarked for their Borrow a Book Program. Members had a great time and were warmly welcomed at their assembly where the cheque was presented. They also had an excellent tour of the school by Brian Begbie, the Principal.
